The Palar River originates in the Nandi Hills of Karnataka and travels about 348 km before emptying into the Bay of Bengal, south of Chennai.

Andhra Pradesh: It passes briefly for about 33 km.

The riverbed contains quartz and feldspar, which break into fine, light-colored sand. Under sunlight or during the dry season, this sand gives the river a white, milky appearance.

Much of the Palar River flows beneath the surface through layers of sand. During monsoon rains, water bursts out from the sand, frothy and milky in appearance. This has earned it the alternate name Guptagamini, meaning “hidden river.”
