Description
India now boasts a state-of-the-art convention centre capable of hosting thousands under one roof. In recent years, the country has invested in modern venues to accommodate global meetings, exhibitions, and cultural events, reflecting India’s growing role on the world stage.
Large exhibition grounds have long been central to urban life, where traders, artists, and businesses showcase their products. Over time, the need for advanced technology, larger halls, and smarter designs became clear. Modern infrastructure often replaces older buildings, sparking discussions about urban development versus heritage preservation. Yet these projects often become iconic parts of city landscapes.
Today, international summits, trade shows, book fairs, and cultural festivals demand world-class facilities that can manage large crowds efficiently and safely. One such venue has emerged as a major landmark in India, already hosting global leaders and major exhibitions.
Location of Bharat Mandapam
Bharat Mandapam is situated within the renowned Pragati Maidan exhibition complex in central New Delhi, near Mathura Road and the historic Purana Qila area. The centre is easily accessible:
Metro: Supreme Court Metro Station
Rail: Approximately a few kilometres from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station
Roads & Parking: Well-connected roads with underground parking facilities
A Modern Indian Convention Centre
Bharat Mandapam ranks among India’s largest convention and exhibition venues, covering roughly 390,000 square metres of built-up space. Its key features include:
A massive meeting hall seating around 7,000 people
Six spacious exhibition halls
Approximately 150,000 square metres of exhibition space
Modern amenities, underground parking, and improved road connectivity
The centre was inaugurated in 2023 and quickly became a symbol of India’s modern infrastructure.
Built on the Legacy of the Hall of Nations
The site previously hosted the iconic Hall of Nations, designed by architect Raj Rewal and inaugurated in 1972 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Celebrated as one of the world’s largest concrete space-frame structures, it was internationally admired. However, it was demolished in 2017 during Pragati Maidan’s redevelopment, sparking protests from architects and heritage advocates.
Redevelopment and Construction
After 2014, the Government of India initiated plans for a world-class exhibition and convention centre. Developed by the India Trade Promotion Organisation and constructed by the National Buildings Construction Corporation, Bharat Mandapam was designed by leading international architectural firms at a cost of over Rs 2,600 crore. The aim was to create a venue capable of hosting global events while modernising Delhi’s infrastructure.
Hosting the G20 Summit
The venue gained international recognition when it hosted the G20 New Delhi Summit in September 2023, welcoming world leaders for high-profile meetings and discussions.
Events at Bharat Mandapam
Continuing Pragati Maidan’s legacy, Bharat Mandapam hosts a wide range of events:
India International Trade Fair
Auto Expo
World Book Fair
Food and hospitality exhibitions
Business and job fairs
Modern facilities allow larger, more advanced exhibitions and conventions than ever before.
