Description
The Union Cabinet has cleared a historic proposal to transform North Block and South Block into part of the proposed Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum, marking a major shift in New Delhi’s administrative landscape. The decision comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the newly built Prime Minister’s Office complex, Seva Teerth, to the nation on February 13, 2026. With this transition, Cabinet meetings will no longer take place in South Block, bringing to a close nearly 95 years of governance from the iconic colonial-era buildings.
From Colonial Administration to Contemporary Governance
Built during British rule, North Block and South Block have long been central to India’s administrative framework. Since Independence in 1947, the Prime Minister’s Office operated from South Block, and Cabinets led by 16 Prime Ministers from Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi have taken key national decisions within its halls.
The final Cabinet meeting held in South Block was described as symbolic, representing India’s movement away from colonial-era governance structures toward a modern, service-driven administrative model aligned with the vision of a developed India.
Seva Teerth and Kartavya Bhavans: Redefining Workspaces
The new administrative complexes, Seva Teerth and Kartavya Bhavans, are designed as technologically advanced, environmentally sustainable, and integrated workspaces. According to the government, the shift reflects a broader transformation:
From a culture of “power” to one of “service”
From colonial administrative structures to citizen-focused governance
From scattered offices to cohesive and efficient systems
The redesign is intended to improve coordination, boost productivity, and accelerate digital governance.
South Block: A Silent Witness to History
Over decades, South Block stood at the centre of some of India’s most defining moments, including:
Critical decisions during Partition
Key wartime and national security deliberations
Policy actions during the Emergency
Economic reforms and liberalisation
Major initiatives such as Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), the Swachh Bharat Mission, Digital India, and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) were approved within its chambers. Significant constitutional and security decisions, including the abrogation of Article 370 and legislation banning triple talaq, also emerged from this historic building.
Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum: Showcasing India’s Civilisational Journey
With Cabinet approval, North and South Blocks will now form part of the Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum. The museum is envisioned as a grand cultural space narrating India’s civilisational story across millennia.
It aims to connect:
India’s ancient cultural heritage
The legacy of the freedom struggle
Post-independence nation-building
The country’s modern global ambitions
Through this transformation, the government seeks to present a unified narrative of India’s evolution—from colonial subjugation to its emergence as a confident and rising global power.
