Why the Kali River is Called the Black River

• Plains and Irrigation: Upon reaching Tanakpur, the river is called the Sharda and becomes crucial for agriculture through the Sharda Canal system.

• Confluence: It eventually merges with the Ghaghara River, which later joins the Ganga.

Importance of the Kali River

• Agriculture: Feeds extensive irrigation networks in northern India, helping turn dry lands fertile.

• Hydropower: Rapid mountain flows make it ideal for electricity generation.

• India–Nepal Cooperation: Shared under the Mahakali Treaty, providing benefits to both countries.

Another Kali River in Karnataka

Karnataka also has a river called Kali, which is sometimes called the Black River:

• Originates in the Western Ghats

• Flows through Dandeli forests

• Appears dark due to manganese-rich rocks

• Ends in the Arabian Sea near Karwar

• Supports structures like the Supa Dam

While both rivers are associated with the name “Black River,” the Himalayan Kali–Sharda River is historically and geographically the more prominent.
