Description
Zimbabwe pulled off a stunning 23-run victory over Australia in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 encounter in Colombo. An unbeaten 64 from Brian Bennett and a disciplined bowling performance helped Zimbabwe defend a competitive total of 169/2.
Bennett Anchors Zimbabwe’s Innings
Batting first, Zimbabwe delivered a measured and controlled performance. Brian Bennett played a pivotal role, remaining unbeaten on 64 and providing stability at the crease. Tadiwanashe Marumani and Ryan Burl contributed 35 runs each, keeping the scoring rate healthy throughout. Captain Sikandar Raza added a quick cameo toward the end, pushing Zimbabwe’s total near 170.
After reaching 125 for one in 15 overs, Zimbabwe seemed poised for an even higher total. However, Australia’s bowlers tightened their line in the final overs to limit the scoring.
Australia’s Bowling Woes
Australia felt the absence of key pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, struggling to make early inroads. Bennett and Marumani put together a 61-run opening partnership, dominating the powerplay with frequent boundaries.
Marcus Stoinis eventually broke the stand by dismissing Marumani, while Cameron Green later removed Ryan Burl to slow the momentum. Spinner Adam Zampa had a difficult outing, failing to pick up a wicket as Zimbabwe rotated strike and played cautiously. A brief injury to Stoinis further disrupted Australia’s plans.
Zimbabwe Defend with Discipline
Although Zimbabwe scored just one six and lost momentum toward the end, their balanced batting effort proved defendable. In reply, Australia fell 23 runs short, with Zimbabwe’s bowlers maintaining tight lines and building pressure throughout the innings.
