Where the Bhagirathi River Begins

The river rises from the Gangotri Glacier in Uttarkashi district. The water emerges from Gaumukh an ice cave at the glacier’s snout. The name “Gaumukh,” meaning “cow’s mouth,” comes from the earlier shape of the icy opening. From here, a small but powerful stream begins its downhill journey.

• Jadh Ganga (Jahnavi): meets the river near Bhaironghati

• Kedar Ganga: merges at Gangotri town

• Asi Ganga: joins near Uttarkashi

• Jalandhari Gad and Kakora Gad: smaller tributaries near Harsil
