This site is historically significant as the place where Buddha first taught Dharma to his disciples. Over centuries, the pillar became buried and partially damaged. In 1904–1905, it was excavated under the supervision of engineer Friedrich Oscar Oertel, revealing the structure that would inspire India’s national emblem.

The Four Lions

The emblem features four lions standing back-to-back, though only three are visible in official representations. These lions signify:

The Circular Base (Abacus)

Below the lions is a circular platform decorated with carvings of four animals: a lion, horse, bull, and elephant. These creatures are separated by the Ashoka Chakra, representing the rule of law and continuity.

The 24-spoke wheel at the center symbolizes:
