The Kohinoor diamond, famously known as the “Mountain of Light”, is one of the most legendary gems in the world. For centuries, rulers and emperors believed this remarkable diamond could bring power, prestige, and sometimes even misfortune. The Kohinoor earned its poetic name from Persian, where “Koh” means mountain and “Noor” means light, literally translating to “Mountain of Light.” Its fame began in 1739 when Persian ruler Nadir Shah invaded Delhi and captured the Mughal treasury. Awestruck by the diamond’s brilliance, he reportedly exclaimed, “Koh-i-Noor!” From that moment, the name became inseparable from the gem.

Historians believe the Kohinoor originated in ancient India, most likely from the renowned Golconda mines in present-day Andhra Pradesh. Ancient Sanskrit texts referred to it as “Syamantaka Mani” or “Samantika Mani”, attributing divine power and fortune to the stone. Originally weighing about 793 carats, the diamond was significantly reduced in size over the centuries due to polishing, which improved its brilliance. By the time it reached Britain, it weighed approximately 190.3 carats, and after recutting, it now weighs 105.6 carats.

The Kohinoor is a Type IIa diamond, among the purest in the world. It is colorless (D-grade), has exceptional clarity, an oval cut with 68 facets, and nearly no nitrogen impurities, making it extremely rare. Discovered in the 13th century, it has over 700 years of documented history, has been part of the British Crown Jewels, and remains one of the most disputed and celebrated diamonds worldwide.
