India Ranks Second Globally in LEED-Certified Green Realty in 2025

India has strengthened its reputation as a global hub for sustainable construction, securing the second-largest share of LEED-certified building space worldwide outside the United States in 2025. The latest data released by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) highlights how India’s fast-growing urban landscape is increasingly aligned with environmentally responsible design and operational practices.

India’s Global Standing in LEED Certification

The United States maintained a commanding lead in LEED adoption, surpassing 50 million gross square metres (GSM) of certified building area. Beyond the US, China held the top position with approximately 26 million GSM, while India followed with around 16 million GSM in 2025. Vietnam’s entry into the global top ten underscored a broader shift among developing economies toward greener infrastructure and sustainability standards.

Greater Emphasis on Upgrading Existing Buildings

A notable trend in India’s green building movement is the rising number of LEED Operations and Maintenance (O+M) certifications. Growth in this segment outpaced new construction and interior design certifications, reflecting a strategic focus on improving the efficiency and sustainability of already operational buildings. The approach helps reduce energy consumption, manage operational expenses more effectively, and minimise environmental impact over the long term.

Expanding Global Adoption of Green Building Practices

Across the world, more than 7,500 commercial properties achieved LEED certification in 2025, representing over 147 million GSM of certified space. Building owners are increasingly turning to green certification not only to meet environmental goals but also to enhance resilience and control rising operational costs. The annual rankings, jointly released by USGBC and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), evaluate green building adoption in regions outside the United States.

In India, the push for LEED certification is spreading well beyond traditional office developments. Manufacturing facilities, logistics centres, hospitality properties, retail destinations, and academic institutions are actively pursuing sustainable design standards.
