Description
A bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been stolen from outside the Australian Indian Community Centre in Melbourne, sparking widespread concern and anger within the Indian diaspora. The 426-kilogram statue, which was gifted by India, has become the subject of a police investigation, with Australian authorities closely examining CCTV footage.
The incident occurred around midday on Monday in Rowville, a suburb of Melbourne. According to police, three unidentified individuals used an angle grinder to cut the statue from its pedestal before removing it from the site. Images shared on social media show the statue cut at the ankles, leaving only its feet attached to the base.
The Gandhi statue had been installed as a symbol of peace, non-violence and shared democratic ideals. Donated by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in New Delhi, it held deep cultural and historical significance for the Indian community in Australia.
Representatives of the Australian Indian Community Charitable Trust confirmed that the theft was captured on CCTV cameras. Witnesses reported that the suspects arrived in a white van and concealed their faces with balaclavas. The footage has been handed over to police, although no arrests have been made so far.
Community leaders have described the incident as part of a wider pattern of vandalism and intimidation targeting Indian institutions in Australia in recent years. Such acts have often been linked to extremist elements, including Khalistan-aligned groups, which have previously targeted Indian diplomatic missions and religious sites. The theft has once again prompted calls for enhanced security to protect cultural landmarks and community spaces overseas.
