The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 is scheduled to commence on February 7 and will be organised by IIT Guwahati. The examination will take place on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, with two sessions conducted each day. GATE 2026 will be held in computer-based format at examination centres across India.
Candidates who have successfully registered for the examination must download their admit cards from the official GATE website and carefully verify all the details mentioned on it. Entry to the examination hall will be permitted only after completing identity verification. Aspirants are advised to arrive at the centre well ahead of the reporting time to avoid any inconvenience.
GATE 2026 exam timing and reporting guidelines
The examination will be conducted in two shifts. The morning session will be held from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, while the afternoon session will take place from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Candidates should refer to their admit card to confirm the exact date, shift, and venue allotted to them.
It is recommended that candidates reach the exam centre at least 60 to 90 minutes before the reporting time. Entry after the closing time of the gate is generally not permitted. Biometric authentication and document verification will be carried out before allowing candidates to enter the exam hall.
Since GATE is a computer-based test, a virtual calculator will be provided on the computer screen. The use of personal calculators or any electronic gadgets is strictly prohibited.
Documents required at the exam centre
Candidates must carry a printed copy of the GATE 2026 admit card to the examination centre. The admit card should be printed on A4-size paper, ensuring that the photograph and other details are clearly visible.
Along with the admit card, candidates must bring an original and valid photo identity proof. Acceptable ID documents include Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, driving licence, or PAN card. The ID proof should match the one submitted during the registration process. Photocopies or digital copies of the ID will not be accepted.
Candidates should also check the instructions mentioned on the admit card in advance to confirm whether a passport-size photograph is required.
Prohibited items and exam-day instructions
Electronic devices such as mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators, as well as books, notes, bags, and study materials are not allowed inside the examination centre.
Rough sheets will be provided at the venue, and candidates must write their name and registration number on them before use. Aspirants are advised to wear simple, comfortable clothing and strictly follow the instructions given by the invigilators. Any violation of the examination rules may result in disqualification.
