Description
Residents of Hanle in Ladakh witnessed an unsettling transformation of the night sky in January when the horizon took on a deep red glow an occurrence almost unknown at such latitudes. While many compared the visuals to polar auroras, space scientists quickly clarified that the phenomenon was linked to an episode of extreme solar turbulence rather than a routine atmospheric event.
The source of the disturbance lay nearly 150 million kilometres away. The Sun had recently released an exceptionally powerful burst of energy in the form of an X-class solar flare, accompanied by a dense stream of magnetised plasma. This solar material travelled through space at immense speed and reached Earth within a day, violently disturbing the planet’s magnetic shield and triggering a severe geomagnetic storm.
As Earth’s magnetic defences were compressed, charged particles penetrated deeper into the upper atmosphere than usual. Their interaction with oxygen atoms at very high altitudes produced a red emission, unlike the green auroras typically confined to polar regions. Because Hanle lies far from these zones, the appearance of such a glow over India was highly unusual.
Scientists warn that this incident reflects a broader trend. The Sun is nearing the peak of its activity cycle, a phase marked by frequent eruptions capable of affecting satellites, navigation systems, and power infrastructure. During this storm, radiation levels rose sharply, prompting safety measures for astronauts in orbit and raising concerns for satellite operators.
India’s Aditya-L1 mission, positioned well ahead of Earth in space, plays a crucial role in detecting these solar threats early—turning a rare red sky into a reminder of how vulnerable modern technology is to solar forces.
