Description

In the frozen reaches of Siberia lies Oymyakon, a tiny village in Russia’s Sakha Republic, famous as the coldest place where people live year-round. Nicknamed the “Pole of Cold,” Oymyakon experiences winter temperatures so extreme that they challenge human survival. Yet, a small, hardy community has adapted to these conditions, turning one of the harshest climates on Earth into home.

A Remote Siberian Village

Oymyakon sits in a narrow valley, surrounded by mountains that trap icy air. This natural bowl keeps cold winds close to the ground, making winter temperatures far lower than in surrounding areas. Despite its isolation, families have lived here for generations, developing unique ways to endure the long, frigid months.

Extreme Temperatures

Winters in Oymyakon are intense, with average temperatures dropping to around -55°C (-67°F). The coldest officially recorded temperature was -67.7°C (-89.9°F), and some unverified reports suggest it may have dipped below -71°C (-96°F). These conditions make daily life difficult, requiring careful preparation for even short trips outdoors.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The village is named after the nearby Oymyakon River. In the local Even language, “kheium” refers to water that doesn’t freeze, a reminder of how life clings to water sources in winter. Ironically, most of the surrounding land is frozen year-round, forming a thick layer of permafrost that prevents farming.

Why It Gets So Cold

Oymyakon’s valley location is a major factor in its extreme cold. Mountains surrounding the village trap frigid air, while clear skies in winter allow heat to escape into space. This combination of geography and climate makes Oymyakon colder than nearly any other inhabited location in the world.

Life in the Cold

Residents have learned to adapt in remarkable ways:

  • Clothing: Layering is essential, with some people wearing 15–20 layers to stay warm.

  • Houses: Homes are built with multiple layers of insulation and elevated above the frozen ground.

  • Heating: Central heating and stoves provide warmth during long winters.

  • Food: High-fat and protein-rich diets, including reindeer, horse meat, and frozen fish (stroganina), keep the body fueled against the cold.

Even with these adaptations, exposure to the outdoors can be dangerous. Frostbite and hypothermia are serious risks, and residents must take care to limit their time outside.

Oymyakon vs. Yakutsk

While Yakutsk, a nearby Siberian city, is also extremely cold (around -37°C/-34°F in winter), Oymyakon is far colder. Temperatures here frequently drop below -60°C (-76°F), earning it the distinction of the coldest inhabited village on the planet.
