Description
Meghalaya is set to host its first-ever state-organized Spice Festival in Mumbai from January 30 to February 1, 2026. The event aims to showcase the state’s premium spices, particularly Lakadong turmeric, connect farmers directly with buyers, expand trade opportunities, and strengthen the value chains for organic spices. This initiative is part of Meghalaya’s strategy to grow its agriculture sector by entering India’s largest commercial market.
Overview of the Meghalaya Spice Festival
The festival will be held at Jio World Drive in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, and will run for three days as a trade-focused event. It is designed to bring Meghalaya’s agricultural products straight to India’s commercial capital. The festival will gather farmer cooperatives, self-help groups, and small enterprises from the state, linking them with retailers, exporters, institutional buyers, and hospitality businesses. The key objective is to position Meghalaya as a reliable supplier of high-quality, sustainable, and traceable spices.
Featured Spices and Products
The festival will highlight Meghalaya’s signature spices, with emphasis on quality, sustainability, and value addition. The star attraction will be GI-tagged Lakadong turmeric, prized for its high curcumin content. Other showcased products include ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, bay leaves, and local spice blends. The event will also focus on branding, certification, and processing techniques, helping farmers achieve better prices and tap into organized markets.
Why Mumbai?
Mumbai, India’s largest commercial hub, offers access to a wide network of buyers, exporters, retail chains, and HoReCa (hotel, restaurant, catering) players. By hosting the festival in the city, Meghalaya aims to connect farmers directly with markets, reduce middlemen, improve price discovery, and foster long-term business partnerships at the national and international levels.
