Description

The Bharat Ratna stands as India’s highest civilian honour, instituted in 1954 to acknowledge exceptional service or achievement of the highest order in any sphere of human endeavour. Bestowed by the President of India, the award recognises individuals whose work has created a lasting national impact, irrespective of profession, gender, or social position. Contributions in public affairs, science, arts, literature, sports, and social service are all considered under its ambit.

Significance of the Bharat Ratna

The Bharat Ratna symbolises the nation’s gratitude to individuals who have shaped India’s intellectual, cultural, scientific, and political legacy. Each year, no more than three recipients can be honoured. The award may also be conferred posthumously, a provision that has enabled recognition of legendary contributors even after their passing.

Recipients are presented with a sanad signed by the President and a bronze medallion designed in the shape of a peepal leaf. The medallion features a radiant sun on one side and the State Emblem along with India’s national motto inscribed in Devanagari script on the reverse. Constitutionally, the Bharat Ratna cannot be used as a title before or after the recipient’s name.
