On India’s 77th Republic Day, a CRPF marching unit on Kartavya Path will be led by a young officer whose journey began in a conflict-sensitive corner of Jammu and Kashmir. Simran Bala, 26, currently serving as an Assistant Commandant in the Central Reserve Police Force, will command a parade formation made up entirely of male personnel an assignment that has not been given to a woman officer before at the national ceremony.

Bala originates from the Nowshera area of Rajouri district, located close to the Line of Control. Life in a militarised border zone exposed her early to the realities of security service and public duty. That environment played a formative role in her decision to pursue a career in uniform rather than deterring her ambitions.

Her induction into the CRPF was itself a first for Rajouri, as no woman from the district had previously entered the force at the officer level. Over time, her professional performance earned her the responsibility of leading a large ceremonial unit, signalling a shift in how leadership roles are allocated within paramilitary formations.

The officer also carries forward a family tradition of service, becoming the third generation in her household to serve in uniform. Those familiar with her career describe her approach as structured, composed, and consistent.

Beyond the parade ground, Bala’s role reflects wider changes underway in India’s security forces. Increasing representation of women in command positions and greater access to professional pathways in border regions are reshaping long-standing institutional norms.
