Description

Every year on 26 January, India marks Republic Day with a magnificent parade in New Delhi, now held along Kartavya Path and watched by millions nationwide. However, few people are aware that the very first Republic Day parade in 1950 did not take place at this iconic avenue. In the early years of the Republic, celebrations were modest, and the parade was organised at a different historic location. Learning about this original venue offers a glimpse into the formative days of independent India.

First Republic Day Parade of 1950

India observed its first Republic Day on 26 January 1950, a milestone that marked the country’s transition into a sovereign republic. On this day, Dr Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as India’s first President. To commemorate this historic occasion, the nation organised its inaugural Republic Day parade, symbolising freedom, unity, and the beginning of self-governance after colonial rule.

Location of the First Parade

The first Republic Day parade was held at the Irwin Amphitheatre in New Delhi, a site known today as the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. At the time, Kartavya Path then called Rajpath had not yet been developed to host such a large-scale national event. As a result, the Irwin Amphitheatre was selected as a suitable and well-equipped venue for the celebrations.

Why Irwin Amphitheatre Was Selected

In 1950, the Irwin Amphitheatre was among Delhi’s finest open-air venues. It had the capacity to host large gatherings and formal ceremonies and was located close to key government offices. These advantages made it an ideal choice for accommodating national leaders, invited dignitaries, and the public during the historic first Republic Day.

Evolution of the Republic Day Parade

In the years that followed, the parade was shifted to Rajpath, now renamed Kartavya Path. Gradually, the event expanded in scale and grandeur, featuring impressive military displays, vibrant state tableaux, cultural performances by schoolchildren, and spectacular air force flypasts. What began as a simple ceremony at the Irwin Amphitheatre evolved into one of India’s most significant national celebrations.

Significance of the First Parade Venue

The Irwin Amphitheatre occupies a unique place in India’s history. It stands as a reminder of the modest beginnings of Republic Day celebrations and the early efforts to foster national unity. While the venue has changed over time, the values of pride, patriotism, and togetherness reflected in the first parade continue to define Republic Day celebrations today.
