Description
Rajasthan is preparing to introduce a new landmark in wildlife conservation and eco-tourism with the proposed Alwar Biological Park. Planned near the Kati Ghati landscape in Alwar district, the project is designed as an integrated hub for animal conservation, rescue, medical care and public education. On completion, it will stand out as the first large-scale biological park in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Site and Land Use Plan
The biological park will be developed on approximately 100 hectares of land between Kati Ghati and Jaisamand. Only about one-third of the area will be used for animal enclosures and visitor facilities, while the majority will remain under green cover to preserve natural habitats and ecological balance.
Wide Range of Wildlife Species
More than 400 animals representing 81 species are expected to be housed at the park. The collection will include flagship species such as lions, cheetahs and different subspecies of tigers native to India. Giraffes, sourced from African conservation programmes, will add a rare and distinctive attraction not commonly seen in northern Indian parks.
Integrated Safari Experiences
One of the defining features of the Alwar Biological Park will be the presence of multiple safari zones within a single complex. Visitors will be able to experience lion safaris, tiger safaris and herbivore safaris without travelling to different locations a first for the NCR region.
Dedicated Wildlife Rescue Infrastructure
The park will feature a specialised animal rescue centre equipped with modern technology. The facility is being planned along the operational model of Gir National Park’s rescue system in Gujarat. Forest officials have conducted detailed studies of Gir’s approach to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and community coordination to adapt those practices locally.
State-of-the-Art Veterinary Care
A modern veterinary hospital will also be established inside the park to provide advanced medical treatment for wild animals. The hospital will be staffed by trained wildlife veterinarians and supported by forest department personnel to ensure round-the-clock care for injured, sick or rescued animals.
Butterfly Conservation Zone
Beyond large mammals, the project also includes a butterfly park aimed at promoting awareness of insect biodiversity. Featuring multiple butterfly species, this section will serve educational purposes and enhance the park’s natural appeal, particularly for students and young visitors.
Planned Animal Transfers
To populate the park responsibly, the forest department has reached out to nearly 25 zoos across India to identify animals eligible for transfer. All relocations will be conducted in phases and strictly in accordance with regulatory approvals and animal welfare guidelines.
Regulatory Clearance and Next Steps
The detailed project report has already been completed. Construction work will commence once the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change grants the necessary clearances. Officials indicate that implementation will move quickly after approval.
Impact on Tourism and Conservation
Once operational, the Alwar Biological Park is expected to emerge as a major wildlife destination in Rajasthan. By combining conservation infrastructure, scientific animal care and visitor-friendly tourism facilities, the project aims to strengthen biodiversity protection while generating economic and educational benefits for the region.
