Williams began her spaceflight career on December 9, 2006, launching aboard Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-116 mission. She later flew on Space Shuttle Atlantis as part of STS-117. Serving as a flight engineer during Expeditions 14 and 15, she completed four spacewalks, setting a record at the time. In 2012, she launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome for Expeditions 32 and 33 and later became commander of Expedition 33, placing her among the few women to lead the ISS.

Her final space mission commenced in June 2024 aboard Boeing’s Starliner for NASA’s Crew Flight Test. Originally planned as a short-duration flight, the mission extended to nine months, with Williams returning to Earth in March 2025.
