A two-day international conference focusing on the connection between global trade rules and the clean energy transition was held at the National Law University Odisha (NLUO) in Cuttack. The event examined how international trade policies can either support or hinder efforts to move towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems across the world.

The conference was organised by NLU Odisha through its Centre for Trade and Investment Law, in collaboration with the Centre for International Trade Law. It was conducted under the World Trade Organization Chairs Programme. The discussions aimed to understand how trade regulations can be designed to promote clean energy growth while also protecting the economic interests of developing countries.

Justice Biraja Prasanna of the Odisha High Court attended the programme as the Chief Guest. Professor N.L. Mitra was present as the Guest of Honour. Ambassador Ujal Singh Bhatia, who earlier served as Chairperson of the WTO Appellate Body, also participated in the deliberations, highlighting the importance of strong legal institutions in managing climate-related trade issues.

Several experts delivered addresses during the conference, including Professor Werner Zdouc, former Director of the WTO Appellate Body Secretariat; Dr. Kaushik Deb from the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago; Professor James J. Nedumpara; and Ms. Alice Tipping of the International Institute for Sustainable Development. Sessions covered topics such as green industrial policies, clean energy regulation, carbon-related trade measures, and the difficulties faced by developing nations during the energy transition.

The conference concluded with interactive discussions between speakers and participants. It provided a platform for exchanging ideas on how the global trading system can contribute to a fair and environmentally sustainable energy future.
