Description

One of the strongest materials found on Earth is not engineered in a laboratory but produced by a spider only a few centimetres long. The Darwin’s bark spider (Caerostris darwini), native to Madagascar’s forests, spins silk that outperforms steel and most synthetic fibres in both strength and toughness. With a tensile strength of around 1.6 gigapascals, its silk is the toughest biological material ever tested. However, new research shows that this extraordinary strength is not shared by all individuals of the species.

Silk Strength and Evolutionary Influences

Across spider species, silk quality is closely linked to body size. Larger spiders generally produce tougher silk, enabling them to capture faster or larger prey. In orb-weaving spiders, evolutionary increases in body size have gone hand in hand with the construction of larger webs and stronger threads. The Darwin’s bark spider exemplifies this trend, as it builds the largest orb webs ever recorded, sometimes stretching across entire rivers.

Controlled Comparative Research

An international team of researchers examined Caerostris darwini and its close relative Caerostris kuntneri. Egg sacs were collected from Madagascar’s Analamazaotra National Park and raised in laboratory conditions to control factors such as diet and humidity. Published in Integrative Zoology, the study aimed to determine whether exceptional silk toughness was consistent across sexes and developmental stages, limited to females, or exclusive to large adults with specific ecological roles.

Who Spins the Strongest Silk?

The findings were conclusive. Only large adult females produced exceptionally tough and stiff dragline silk capable of absorbing far more energy before breaking. Silk produced by males and juveniles of both sexes was mechanically similar and significantly weaker. This suggests that females activate energy-intensive physiological mechanisms for producing high-performance silk only when their size and web-building demands make it necessary.

Energy Trade-offs and Web Design

Producing high-performance silk is metabolically costly, as it requires amino acids such as proline. As a result, adult females construct sparser but highly efficient webs that use less silk per unit area. In contrast, juveniles and males spin denser webs made from less costly material. This adaptive strategy ensures that energy is invested in superior silk only when it provides clear survival benefits, illustrating how body size, sex, ecology, and behaviour collectively shape one of nature’s most remarkable materials.
