UK Member of Parliament Ed Davey launched a sharp attack on US President Donald Trump, describing him as the “most corrupt president the United States has ever seen” and accusing him of behaving like an “international gangster.” Speaking in the UK Parliament while addressing Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, Davey said Trump was acting as a bully who believes he can seize whatever he wants through intimidation and force.
Davey warned that Trump’s actions pose a serious threat to global stability, claiming the US president has undermined the sovereignty of allied nations, questioned the future of NATO, and now threatened Britain and several European countries with punitive trade measures. He said the UK must stand firmly alongside its European allies to push back against what he called unprovoked aggression.
Calling the situation a “grave moment” for the UK, Europe and the wider world, Davey argued that Trump’s policies were attacking economies, livelihoods and national security. In a sarcastic remark, he suggested there were only two ways to deal with Trump either appease him with gifts and money, such as offering a new jet or transferring billions into his cryptocurrency account, or take a firm stand against him.
Davey’s comments come amid escalating tensions over Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on European nations following resistance to his stated ambition to take control of Greenland. After several European capitals rejected the proposal, Trump announced on Saturday that the US would introduce a 10 percent tariff on imports from eight countries including Denmark, France, Germany and the UK from February 1. He warned that these duties could rise to 25 percent by June 1 if no agreement is reached.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticised the proposed measures at the World Economic Forum in Davos, calling them a mistake between long-standing allies. She warned that escalating trade tensions would only benefit common adversaries and said the European response would be “unflinching, united and proportional.”
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cautioned on Monday that any retaliatory tariffs by the European Union would be “unwise.” Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron said France preferred “respect over bullying” and dismissed the proposed tariffs as unacceptable.
Trump has repeatedly defended his stance by arguing that the United States needs control of mineral-rich Greenland for national security, claiming it must be protected from growing Russian and Chinese influence.
