Description

China’s Fengyun-3D meteorological satellite has confirmed that iceberg A23a, once the world’s largest by surface area, has entered its final phase of breakup. Recent satellite data show that the massive iceberg, which calved from Antarctica nearly 40 years ago, is rapidly diminishing and could vanish entirely within weeks.

Satellite Images Show Accelerated Melting

Data released by the China Meteorological Administration reveal that true-colour images captured by Fengyun-3D on January 14 indicate A23a’s main body has shrunk to about 506 square kilometres. This is a steep decline from its original area of roughly 4,170 square kilometres when it broke away in 1986. Even more striking, just three weeks earlier the iceberg still spanned nearly 948 square kilometres, underscoring the speed of its collapse.

Tracking Through the Fengyun-3 Satellite Network

A23a has been closely monitored since 2023 using Fengyun-3D, part of China’s Fengyun-3 satellite constellation. With a spatial resolution of 250 metres, the satellite delivers detailed imagery that allows scientists to observe changes in the iceberg’s structure and surface. Researchers report that the pace of fragmentation increased sharply earlier this year.

What Is Causing the Breakup

The rapid disintegration is largely driven by hydrofracturing, a process in which meltwater collects on the iceberg’s surface and seeps into internal cracks. As the water pools into ponds and glacial lakes, it exerts pressure that widens fractures from within. Satellite images show blue meltwater concentrated in A23a’s central areas, held in place by raised ridges along the edges. Seasonal conditions are intensifying the effect, with the Southern Hemisphere summer bringing warmer air, clearer skies, and seawater temperatures above 3°C, all of which speed up melting.

From Antarctic Giant to Near Disappearance

A23a separated from Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf in 1986 and drifted across the Southern Ocean for decades. According to Zheng Zhaojun of China’s National Satellite Meteorological Center, the iceberg is now close to complete breakup. Ocean currents are carrying smaller fragments into warmer waters, hastening their decay. The fate of A23a highlights how even the largest Antarctic ice masses are increasingly vulnerable to changing climatic and ocean conditions.
