Description
Singapore has been named the world’s most responsible nation, with India ranking 16th, according to the newly released Responsible Nations’ Index (RNI). The index, which prioritises ethical and accountable governance over sheer power or economic strength, was formally launched in New Delhi by former President Ram Nath Kovind, marking the introduction of a new way to assess national conduct.
Global standings and India’s performance
Among 154 countries assessed, Singapore secured the top position, followed by Switzerland and Denmark in second and third place. The Central African Republic ranked last. India’s 16th position placed it well ahead of several major global powers, including the United States at 66th and China at 68th. Pakistan was ranked 90th, underscoring notable regional differences in governance responsibility.
Purpose and philosophy
The Responsible Nations’ Index evaluates how responsibly countries use their power in relation to their citizens, the international community, and the environment. Speaking at the launch, Ram Nath Kovind described the index as a “moral mirror” rather than a competitive ranking, stressing the importance of ethical governance, inclusive growth, and sustainability in shaping future national and global progress.
Structure and methodology
Developed by the World Intellectual Foundation in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru University and methodologically validated by the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai, the index is built around three main pillars: internal responsibility, environmental responsibility, and external responsibility. These are measured through seven dimensions, 15 aspects, and 58 indicators.
A shift in global assessment
According to WIF founder Sudhanshu Mittal, the RNI represents a significant shift in how nations are evaluated, focusing on the responsible use of power rather than dominance or wealth. The index seeks to encourage ethical governance, humane development, and global stewardship, reinforcing the view that long-term prosperity cannot be sustained without responsibility.
