Researchers have uncovered a previously unknown microscopic crustacean in the Kavaratti lagoon of Lakshadweep, identifying it as both a new genus and a new species. The finding draws attention to the immense but still poorly studied marine diversity present in India’s island environments. Classified under the family Laophontidae of the Copepoda class, the organism is extremely small and can only be observed using high-resolution microscopes.

Origin of the Discovery

Samples collected from the lagoon sediments of Kavaratti initially appeared similar to already documented copepod species. Closer microscopic examination, however, revealed a combination of anatomical features unlike those of any recognised genus within Laophontidae, leading scientists to establish it as a distinct taxonomic group.

Scientific Naming and Publication

The newly identified organism has been named Indiaphonte bijoyi. The genus name reflects its Indian origin, while the species name honours S. Bijoy Nandan, a respected marine scientist and educator. The formal taxonomic description was prepared by Neelima Vasu K. of Cochin University of Science and Technology, working alongside Samuel E. Gómez-Noguera from UNAM University. Their research has been published in an international peer-reviewed journal.

Structure and Ecological Function

The species has a narrow, semi-cylindrical body that is slightly flattened and gradually tapers towards the tail end, with sensory appendages at the front. Females are marginally larger, measuring about 518–772 micrometres, while males range from 508–756 micrometres. As part of the meiofaunal community, it inhabits sediment layers and contributes to nutrient recycling and the overall stability of the lagoon ecosystem.

Harpacticoid copepods are essential to marine food webs, as they produce omega-3 fatty acids crucial for fish development and human health.
