Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store has confirmed that US President Donald Trump recently sent him a personal message in which he connected his renewed interest in Greenland to not having received the Nobel Peace Prize. Store said he replied by clarifying that the prize is not decided by the Norwegian state but by an independent committee that operates separately from the government.

The exchange occurred after Store and Finnish President Alexander Stubb jointly reached out to Trump, urging restraint amid growing friction between the United States and Europe, particularly over proposed tariff increases. Trump’s message was sent later the same day in response to that outreach, according to Norwegian officials.

In his communication, Trump suggested that the absence of Nobel recognition had altered his perspective on global diplomacy, indicating that he no longer felt constrained to focus exclusively on peace-oriented considerations. He also reiterated his belief that Greenland is vital to US strategic interests, questioning Denmark’s historical claim over the Arctic island and arguing that American control would enhance global security.

Trump further asserted that the United States has carried a disproportionate burden within NATO and implied that the alliance should reciprocate by supporting Washington’s objectives in the Arctic. His remarks came amid heightened tensions with European allies over Greenland’s future status.

The White House later defended Trump’s stance, framing it as a matter of national defense rather than territorial ambition. Officials stated that the president views Greenland as a critical location for addressing emerging security challenges in the Arctic and believes stronger US involvement would benefit both regional stability and Greenland’s residents.

The disclosure of the message followed calls by European leaders for dialogue and de-escalation, as they sought direct engagement with Trump to prevent further deterioration in transatlantic relations.
