Description
Delhi is preparing to revamp its emergency response system with the rollout of a unified helpline number, 112. Announcing the initiative, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the move brings the national capital in line with the Centre’s vision of a single, easy-to-remember emergency number for all citizens.
Aligned with the National Emergency Framework
The Chief Minister noted that the Ministry of Home Affairs has designated 112 as India’s national emergency number. In accordance with this mandate, Delhi will merge all existing emergency helplines into one platform. Once implemented, residents will no longer need to recall separate numbers for police, fire, or medical assistance.
Multiple Ways to Seek Help
The new system will allow citizens to access emergency services through voice calls, a mobile app, SMS, panic buttons, and online platforms. This ensures support even when callers are unable to speak. A single alert can simultaneously notify the police, fire brigade, ambulance services, and disaster management agencies, significantly cutting response times.
Technology-Enabled Response Mechanism
The upgraded Emergency Response Support System, ERSS 2.0, will operate through a centralised Public Safety Answering Point. An advanced control-room dashboard will enable real-time incident tracking, automatic location detection of callers, and swift identification of the nearest response vehicle. By eliminating manual location sharing, the system is designed to speed up dispatch, especially during the critical golden hour.
Phased Rollout and Enhanced Accountability
The Chief Minister explained that implementation will be carried out in phases. Initially, all existing emergency numbers will be integrated into 112, followed by technical enhancements, public awareness drives, and training for call handlers. Continuous monitoring will ensure that alternative response vehicles are deployed in case of delays, strengthening accountability and delivering faster, more coordinated emergency services across Delhi.
