Description
The Lokpal of India marked its Foundation Day on January 16, recalling the date on which Section 3 of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013 became operational in 2014. The observance highlighted the formal beginning of the country’s highest anti-corruption authority and offered a moment to assess its expanding role in upholding transparency, probity, and accountability in governance.
In-house Commemoration in the National Capital
The Foundation Day programme took place at the Lokpal headquarters in New Delhi, with Chairperson Justice A. M. Khanwilkar and Members of the institution in attendance. Departing from the previous year’s public event at the Maneckshaw Centre, the 2026 celebration was conducted internally. The restrained format reflected the institution’s commitment to financial discipline amid budgetary limitations.
Focus on Ethics and Democratic Values
Addressing the gathering, Justice Lingappa Narayana Swami stressed the importance of the Lokpal as an institutional safeguard for ethical public administration. He noted that the occasion serves not merely as a ceremonial milestone but as an opportunity to evaluate progress, reinforce commitments to fairness and vigilance, and strengthen citizens’ faith in democratic institutions.
Leadership Perspective and Public Confidence
In his remarks, Justice A. M. Khanwilkar revisited the popular movements and sustained advocacy that paved the way for the Lokpal’s creation, acknowledging the role played by figures such as Anna Hazare and former Supreme Court judge Justice N. Santosh Hegde. He characterised the Lokpal as a people-centric institution, rooted in public aspirations. Referring to operational trends, he highlighted a steady growth in the number of complaints received in recent years, with expectations of a further surge in 2025–26, reflecting increased public awareness and trust.
Technology Upgrade and Recognitions
A key highlight of the event was the launch of a new IT system and Data Centre aimed at enabling seamless, paperless processing of complaints. The programme also featured the presentation of awards to winners of competitions organised on International Anti-Corruption Day 2025, recognition of employees with long and distinguished service, and honours for children of Lokpal staff who excelled in academics, sports, and cultural activities.
