Description
The third International Kite Festival was inaugurated on Friday at Baansera Park in New Delhi by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who used the event to speak about the deeper meaning of kite flying in Indian society. He said the tradition reflects shared memories, cultural continuity, and people’s instinct to come together, and should be promoted far beyond a single annual celebration.
Shah appealed to the Delhi government and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to take concrete steps to give the festival a long-term structure. He suggested that Delhi has the potential to become a nationwide focal point for kite-related events if the festival is planned systematically and opened up to wider participation across the country.
Speaking on India’s civilisational outlook, the Home Minister said festivals have always been central to Indian life. Citing the idea expressed by poet Kalidasa that Indians are naturally inclined towards celebration, he noted that occasions like Uttarayan are not just cultural markers but social experiences that encourage unity and shared identity.
He also highlighted the historical dimension of kite flying, recalling its symbolic use during the freedom movement. Shah said that during protests against the Simon Commission, people across India flew kites carrying messages of opposition, transforming the sky into a platform for collective expression against colonial rule.
During the programme, Shah referred to the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, which marks a millennium since the first attack on the Somnath temple. He said that while those who attempted to destroy the shrine have been forgotten by history, the temple continues to stand as a sign of resilience, faith, and the enduring flow of Sanatana Dharma within Indian civilisation.
