Description
Ponduru Khadi, an exquisite hand-spun and hand-woven cotton fabric from Andhra Pradesh, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, marking a landmark achievement for India’s traditional Khadi industry. This recognition is expected to boost international awareness, provide legal safeguards, and improve market opportunities for artisans preserving this age-old craft.
GI Status to Protect Heritage and Origin
The GI tag for Ponduru Khadi has been granted by the Geographical Indications Registry in favour of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). The certification ensures legal protection against imitation and misuse while officially affirming the fabric’s unique geographical origin. Ponduru Khadi is produced solely in Ponduru village of Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, where it is traditionally known as Patnulu.
KVIC Hails GI Tag as a Proud Moment
KVIC Chairman Manoj Kumar termed the recognition a proud milestone for the Khadi sector. He credited the consistent policy support and vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for helping traditional Khadi products gain national and global recognition. Initiatives such as Vocal for Local and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, he noted, have strengthened artisan livelihoods and restored respect for indigenous crafts.
Distinctive Artistry of Ponduru Khadi
What sets Ponduru Khadi apart is its entirely manual production process, using locally cultivated Hill cotton, Punasa cotton, and Red cotton. From cleaning and spinning to weaving, every stage is carried out by hand, preserving techniques handed down through generations. A unique regional practice involves using the jawbone of the Valuga fish to clean cotton. The fabric is also renowned for its exceptionally fine yarn count of 100–120, reflecting superior quality, durability, and craftsmanship.
Economic and Cultural Importance
The GI recognition is expected to raise artisan incomes, create employment, and expand the global footprint of Ponduru Khadi. KVIC highlighted its deep connection with Mahatma Gandhi’s Swadeshi movement, symbolising self-reliance, sustainability, and ethical production. With GI protection now in place, Ponduru Khadi is poised to emerge as both a treasured cultural heritage and a modern emblem of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
