Description
India has reached a significant digital milestone by emerging as the second-largest 5G market in the world, behind only China. Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that the country has surpassed 400 million 5G users, underscoring the exceptional pace at which next-generation telecom services have been adopted nationwide.
Unmatched Pace of 5G Deployment
Following the rollout of 5G services in 2022, India has executed one of the fastest network expansions seen globally. Government data shows that 5G infrastructure is now present in nearly all districts, with coverage extending to about 85 per cent of the population. Telecom companies have collectively set up close to 4.69 lakh 5G base transceiver stations, reflecting the massive scale of investment and execution. Additionally, around 25 crore mobile subscribers have moved to 5G networks since their introduction, according to the Ministry of Communications.
Strengthening Rural Access and Digital Inclusion
The growth of telecom infrastructure has played a crucial role in improving connectivity in rural India. Between March 2014 and September 2025, rural telephone connections expanded by 42.9 per cent, far exceeding the growth recorded in urban areas. Rural connections increased from 377.78 million to 539.83 million over this period. India’s internet footprint has also expanded sharply, with total connections crossing 100 crore to reach 100.29 crore, compared to 25.15 crore in 2014, highlighting a nearly 299 per cent rise.
Focus on Home-Grown Telecom Technology
As part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, India has accelerated efforts to build indigenous telecom capabilities. The country is now among a select group of five nations to develop its own 4G technology stack, which can be upgraded to support 5G services. Remarkably, this was achieved within just two years, much faster than typical global timelines. Simultaneously, India is advancing indigenous research and development initiatives aimed at future 6G technologies.
India’s Growing Global Digital Standing
The government has noted that India’s 5G expansion sets international benchmarks in terms of scale, rollout speed, and affordability. Backed by progressive policy frameworks, rapid consumer uptake, and an emphasis on domestic innovation, India is steadily strengthening its position as a major digital economy and an influential force in the evolution of global telecommunications.
