Description
India’s chess fraternity has welcomed a new Grandmaster, with 21-year-old Aaryan Varshney becoming the country’s 92nd player to earn the elite title. He confirmed the final norm needed for the honour at the Andranik Margaryan Memorial Tournament in Armenia, finishing his task before the final round. What makes his success especially striking is the unconventional route he followed, built on discipline, self-belief, and a rare father-son collaboration.
Built at home, away from formal systems
Aaryan’s development did not follow the familiar academy-to-coach pipeline. Instead, his chess education took shape entirely at home under the guidance of his father, Gaurav Varshney, a Delhi-based physics teacher. After Aaryan’s mother left when he was very young, Gaurav single-handedly managed family responsibilities while also nurturing his son’s chess ambitions.
Serious training began when Aaryan was seven. For nearly two years, his father handled every aspect of preparation, from analysing games to shaping mental discipline. The focus remained on learning through practice and reflection rather than intensive theoretical drilling.
Consistent growth through self-learning
Aaryan entered competitive chess in December 2014 with a rating of 1261. Over the next few years, steady improvement and rigorous self-study saw his rating climb beyond 2300. A major milestone arrived in July 2018 when he won the National Under-13 Championship in Ahmedabad, establishing himself as one of India’s most promising young players.
His training style remained distinctive. He avoided chess manuals altogether, instead depending on software tools like ChessBase and detailed post-game analysis. In 2024, he secured the International Master title, earning all required norms in open tournaments without early exposure to the European circuit.
Breaking through without financial backing
Financial constraints played a defining role throughout his journey. As the family’s sole earner, Gaurav Varshney could not fund long overseas training stints. Nevertheless, once international travel became feasible after the pandemic, Aaryan capitalised on limited opportunities, collecting IM and GM norms across Asia and Europe.
His transition from International Master to Grandmaster was remarkably quick. In just six months, he achieved three GM norms at events in Greece, Bangladesh, and Armenia, completing one of the fastest rises in recent Indian chess.
Ambitions beyond the title
With the Grandmaster title secured, Aaryan is now focused on bigger goals. He aspires to challenge for the world championship and hopes to score a win against reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju, whom he has already faced in closely fought encounters. His story highlights how determination, adaptability, and committed mentorship can still open doors at the highest level of competitive sport, even without conventional advantages.
