Marine researchers have identified an exceptionally large and centuries-old black coral in the deep waters off New Zealand, offering rare insight into long-lived deep-sea ecosystems. Discovery in Fiordland’s Deep Waters

The coral was found during a deep-sea expedition in Fiordland, led by scientists from Victoria University of Wellington. Rising more than 13 feet tall and spreading nearly 15 feet wide, the coral is estimated to be 300 to 400 years old. This makes it the largest black coral ever recorded in New Zealand waters.

Marine biologist James Bell noted that the coral is extraordinarily large compared to typical black corals, which remain relatively small even at maturity. The coral is protected under New Zealand’s Wildlife Act, making it illegal to collect or harm it. Despite the name, black coral appears white when alive, as only its skeleton is black.
