Supreme Court Declines to Hear Jana Nayagan Producers’ Plea, Refers Case to Madras High Court

India’s top court on Thursday chose not to examine a petition submitted by the producers of actor Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, asking KVN Productions to continue legal proceedings before the Madras High Court instead. The Supreme Court further instructed that the matter be placed before the High Court’s division bench on January 20, 2026.

The dispute centres on the film’s pending certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Earlier in the week, a stay was imposed by the Madras High Court on an order passed by a single judge that had directed the CBFC to grant approval. Following that stay, the filmmakers approached the Supreme Court seeking relief.

As the delay continues, KVN Productions’ representative Venkat K. Narayana posted a video message on social media expressing the emotional impact of the situation on the cast and crew. He described the prolonged uncertainty as distressing for everyone involved and said the team considers the project especially important, as it is intended to mark Vijay’s final appearance in cinema after years of public support.

Earlier this month, the producers officially confirmed that the film would not meet its originally planned January 9 release. In their announcement, they said the postponement was unavoidable and assured audiences that a revised release date would be communicated soon, while also thanking fans for their patience.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan brings together a large ensemble including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain. The film has attracted exceptional attention as it is being promoted as Vijay’s final film before he shifts his focus entirely to political life.
