Which Is Biggest Air Force Station In Asia?: Hindon AFS Explained
fsjd_icon1 CURRENT AFFAIRS

Description

Asia is home to some of the world’s most powerful and expansive air bases. These stations are far more than aircraft parking zones they function as vital centres for defence, training, disaster response, rescue operations, and humanitarian assistance. Equipped with long runways, massive hangars, and advanced air-traffic systems, they are capable of handling large numbers of aircraft efficiently. Among them, one air base stands out as the largest on the continent.

Hindon Air Force Station

Hindon Air Force Station, located in Uttar Pradesh, India, is the biggest air force station in Asia. It operates under the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force and is situated near Ghaziabad, close to the national capital. Due to its size and strategic importance, Hindon plays a critical role in India’s defence framework.

Strategic Location

Positioned on the outskirts of Delhi near the Hindon River, the base provides rapid aerial coverage of the National Capital Region. Aircraft deployed from Hindon can reach Delhi’s airspace within minutes, making it a key asset for the protection of the capital and surrounding areas.

Base of Advanced Transport Aircraft

Hindon serves as the primary base for the Indian Air Force’s most advanced transport aircraft, including the C-17 Globemaster III and the C-130J Super Hercules. These aircraft are essential for heavy-lift operations, troop deployment, disaster relief, humanitarian aid, and special missions, forming the backbone of India’s strategic airlift capability.

Venue for Air Force Day

Since 2006, Hindon Air Force Station has hosted the annual Indian Air Force Day Parade on 8 October. Previously held in Delhi, the event was moved to Hindon to allow more airspace for aerial displays and to reduce interference with civilian air traffic. The station now hosts impressive fly-pasts and ceremonial events each year.

Evolution into a Modern Hub

In its earlier years, Hindon housed fighter aircraft such as MiG jets. However, due to safety concerns, it was later redesignated primarily as a transport and helicopter base. Over time, the station was extensively modernised with upgraded runways, new hangars, and advanced infrastructure, transforming it into a major strategic hub.

Civil Enclave for Regional Flights

Hindon also includes a dedicated civil terminal operated by the Airports Authority of India. Under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme, the terminal supports civilian flights, improving air travel access for nearby cities. Despite civilian operations, the base remains firmly under Indian Air Force control.

Importance of Hindon Air Force Station

Hindon Air Force Station is significant not only because of its vast size but also because of its crucial role. It safeguards the nation’s capital, supports emergency and humanitarian missions, hosts national-level celebrations, and operates some of the most capable aircraft in the Indian Air Force. For these reasons, Hindon Air Force Station rightfully holds the distinction of being the largest air force station in Asia.
