National Campaign Launched to Boost Rural Women Entrepreneurship

The Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY–NRLM) has taken a significant step towards enhancing rural incomes with the launch of a National Campaign on Entrepreneurship. This initiative aims to expand non-farm livelihood opportunities for rural women and accelerate progress toward the government’s goal of creating three crore Lakhpati Didis nationwide.

Strengthening Non-Farm Livelihoods in Rural Areas

DAY–NRLM focuses on achieving sustainable income growth for rural women by promoting diversified livelihood options. Non-farm enterprises have emerged as an important complement to agriculture, helping reduce income instability and vulnerability. Initiatives such as the Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme have already demonstrated the potential of community-driven enterprise models supported by trained grassroots functionaries.

Importance of Community Resource Persons

Community Resource Persons (CRPs) play a crucial role in identifying viable business opportunities, supporting enterprise start-ups, mentoring women entrepreneurs, and providing continuous handholding. Their contribution is vital to achieving the scale envisioned under the Lakhpati Didi initiative, which targets annual incomes of at least Rs 1 lakh for women members of self-help groups. Expanding and strengthening this cadre is considered key to meeting ambitious livelihood objectives.

National Campaign on Entrepreneurship

Aligned with these priorities, the National Campaign on Entrepreneurship was launched on January 12, 2026, by the Additional Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development. The launch event was attended by the Advisor, NITI Aayog (RD & PR), the Chairman of NABARD, and representatives from institutions including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, IFMR LEAD, the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, and IIM Calcutta Innovation Park. Senior officials and CEOs from State Rural Livelihood Missions also participated.

Scale, Targets, and Expected Outcomes

Under the campaign, 50,000 Community Resource Persons will be trained in enterprise promotion, while entrepreneurship development training will be extended to 50 lakh self-help group members. By strengthening enterprise ecosystems in rural areas, the initiative is expected to stimulate local economic growth, enhance access to formal finance, and build a resilient, inclusive, and self-reliant non-farm rural economy led by women entrepreneurs.
