Boda Tyohar Showcases Hati Tribe’s Rich Cultural Traditions

The month-long tribal festival Boda Tyohar, the largest annual cultural celebration of the Hati tribe, has begun with great traditional enthusiasm in Nahan and throughout the Trans-Giri region of Sirmour district in Himachal Pradesh. Observed by more than three lakh members of the community, the festival highlights the tribe’s ancient customs, social values and distinct cultural identity.

Cultural Importance of Boda Tyohar

Also referred to as “Magho ko Tyohar,” Boda Tyohar holds deep socio-religious significance for the Hati tribe, according to Dr Ami Chand Kamal, President of the Kendriya Hati Samiti. The festival is celebrated across 154 panchayats in the Trans-Giri area and extends to the Jaunsar Babar tribal region of Uttarakhand, as well as parts of upper Shimla, Choupal tehsil and Kinnaur district. The celebrations commence on the eve of Posh Dwadashi and unfold in three distinct phases.

Rituals, Deities and Community Celebrations

The festival begins with “Bhatioj,” during which families prepare traditional dishes such as Pude, Bedoli, Patanday, Dhroti and Gudoli, offering them to village deities. Celebrations are often centred around temples dedicated to local and clan deities like Shirgul Maharaj, Bijat Maharaj and Mahasu Maharaj. In many villages, the festivities take place in the Sanjha Angan near the shrine of Thari Devi, where community singing and dancing continue throughout the month.

Women-Centred Traditions and Social Harmony

Boda Tyohar underscores the important role of women in Hati society. Brothers visit their married sisters bearing “Saje ka Duna,” while sisters traditionally return to their parental homes during the festival. Meat is preserved in every household until the sisters arrive as honoured guests. On the eighth day, the “Khoda” festival is observed with family feasts, during which the cooked heart of a male goat is customarily served to the most respected guest.

Recognition and Living Heritage

Following a 56-year-long movement, the Hati community was officially recognised as a Scheduled Tribe after a constitutional amendment on August 4, 2023. After Khoda, the tradition of “Boidoot” begins, wherein each household hosts villagers and relatives for communal meals. Scholars and researchers continue to document the festival’s distinctive practices, highlighting Boda Tyohar’s vital role in preserving the living cultural heritage of the Hati tribe.
