Description
Google has launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard designed to redefine digital commerce in the era of artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to help retailers connect more efficiently with consumers who increasingly rely on AI tools for product discovery, comparison, and purchasing decisions.
How the Universal Commerce Protocol Works
UCP allows retailers to create and display relevant offers directly within Google campaign settings. Powered by agentic AI, Google determines the optimal timing and placement of these offers based on shopper intent and context. The protocol spans the entire commerce lifecycle—from discovery to purchase to post-transaction support providing a unified framework for AI-driven retail interactions.
AI Checkout and “Direct Offers” Pilot
As part of UCP, Google is introducing a new checkout feature for select product listings shown in AI Mode on Search and within the Gemini app. This enables shoppers to complete purchases directly while researching products on Google. Simultaneously, Google is piloting “Direct Offers” through Google Ads, targeting consumers who use AI for product discovery and prioritize value. The pilot currently focuses on discounts, with plans to expand to bundles, free shipping, and other value-added offers.
Standardizing Agentic Commerce Systems
According to Vidhya Srinivasan, UCP creates a shared language that enables AI agents, business systems, and payment providers to work together seamlessly. Rather than requiring custom integrations for each platform, the protocol ensures broad interoperability. UCP complements existing frameworks such as Agent2Agent (A2A), Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), and Model Context Protocol (MCP), strengthening the wider agentic AI ecosystem.
Co-developed with major retailers including Shopify, Target, and Walmart, and supported by partners such as American Express, Flipkart, and Mastercard, UCP also introduces Business Agent on Search. This feature lets shoppers interact directly with brands in a conversational format. Acting like a virtual sales associate, it answers product queries in a brand’s voice, helping retailers engage consumers during key buying moments and drive conversions.
