Description

Justice Revati Mohite Dere assumed office on Saturday as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, becoming the first woman to hold the position since the court’s establishment. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Durbar Hall, Lok Bhavan in Shillong, marking a landmark moment for the state and India’s judicial history.

The oath was administered by Meghalaya Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar in the presence of senior judges, government officials, and members of the legal fraternity. Justice Dere replaces Justice Soumen Sen, who has been transferred to serve at the Kerala High Court.

Before her appointment, Justice Dere served as a judge of the Bombay High Court, where she built a strong reputation for handling cases related to constitutional law, criminal justice, and civil disputes. Her elevation followed a recommendation by the Supreme Court collegium in December, which highlighted her judicial competence and professional integrity.

Her appointment carries particular importance for Meghalaya, a state with a matrilineal social system that, until now, had never had a woman lead its high court. Legal analysts view her elevation as a positive step toward greater gender diversity in higher judicial offices. Under her leadership, the Meghalaya High Court is expected to continue strengthening access to justice, uphold constitutional principles, and improve judicial efficiency in the northeastern region.
