DRDO Develops Portable Water Desalination System for Soldiers in Remote and Challenging Terrains

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a portable water desalination device to address the drinking water needs of soldiers operating in challenging and water-scarce environments. This system is designed to support small teams deployed in remote, coastal, or high-altitude areas where access to potable water is limited.

Sea Water Desalination System (SWaDeS)

Named the Sea Water Desalination System (SWaDeS), the device was developed by DRDO’s Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur in response to operational requirements outlined by the tri-service commands. It can function either manually or using an engine-driven mode, offering versatility across different deployment scenarios.

Adaptable for Diverse Terrains

SWaDeS is suitable for naval operations and coastal bases where seawater is abundant. It is also capable of inland deployment in saline water regions such as Pangong Tso in Ladakh, a high-altitude lake near the Line of Actual Control with China, which hosts a substantial troop presence. The system can purify saline water to safe drinking standards.

Capacity and Technical Specifications

The manually operated version is lightweight and portable, capable of meeting the emergency drinking water needs of 10–12 personnel during long-range patrols or isolated postings. The engine-driven version can treat seawater with salinity up to 35,000 mg/L of total dissolved solids, reducing it to below 500 mg/L, sufficient for 20–25 soldiers.

DRDO has also developed a wide range of water purification solutions for both military and civilian applications under varied climatic and terrain conditions. These include household units for removing arsenic, iron, and manganese, as well as specialised Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) water purification systems for contaminated environments. The portfolio spans fixed installations, transportable units, and vehicle-mounted systems, underscoring DRDO’s commitment to ensuring water security for defence and civilian needs alike.
