The Indian Army has recently inked a Rs 293 crore deal with private defence firm NIBE Limited, in partnership with Israel’s Elbit Systems, for the supply of the Suryastra rocket launcher system. This contract marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in defence technology, particularly in precision artillery and rocket systems.

About the Suryastra Rocket Launcher System

The Suryastra is India’s first indigenously developed universal multi-calibre rocket launcher system, designed to enhance the army’s long-range firepower and precision strike capabilities. It represents a leap forward in terms of versatility, accuracy, and operational efficiency in battlefield conditions.

Key Features and Capabilities

• Long-Range Precision Strikes: The system is capable of delivering precision attacks on surface targets at ranges of 150 km and 300 km, allowing strategic engagement of distant threats.

• Multi-Target Engagement: Suryastra can simultaneously target multiple enemy positions at different ranges, offering superior tactical flexibility.

• High Accuracy: Trials have demonstrated a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of less than five meters, underscoring the system’s reliability in precision targeting.

• Loitering Munition Capability: The launcher can also deploy loitering munitions over a range of up to 100 km, enhancing operational versatility.

• Advanced Technology: The system incorporates the PULS (Precise & Universal Launching System) technology from Elbit Systems, integrated with a modern fire control mechanism. It combines GPS, inertial navigation, and digital ballistic computation for precise targeting.

• Rapid Mobility and Reload: Its semi-automated reload and shoot-and-scoot capabilities reduce exposure to counter-battery fire, improving survivability on the battlefield.

Development and Collaboration

The Suryastra rocket launcher is developed by NIBE Limited, a Pune-based private defence manufacturer, in collaboration with Israel’s Elbit Systems. This partnership combines India’s growing domestic defence manufacturing capabilities with advanced international technologies, ensuring that the Indian Army receives a world-class precision rocket system.
