Construction work officially started in 1970, and the project was completed and commissioned for commercial operation in 1987.

The project is developed, owned, and operated by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), a premier government-owned entity responsible for hydropower development in India. Notably, Salal was the first hydropower project constructed by India in the Kashmir region under the framework of the Indus Waters Treaty, which governs the sharing and management of the Indus River system between India and Pakistan.

Salal Dam rises 130 meters above its foundation and is situated at an elevation of 1,627 feet above mean sea level.
