Description
The Union Government has taken a significant step to enhance India’s agricultural resilience with the release of 184 new crop varieties developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). This initiative aims to boost productivity, strengthen climate adaptability, and increase farmers’ incomes, while reinforcing national food security.
Launch of New Crop Varieties
Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan unveiled 184 crop varieties spanning 25 different crops at a ceremony in New Delhi. The release includes 60 rice varieties, 50 maize varieties, 13 oilseed varieties, as well as several pulses, millets, and other crops. These new varieties feature higher yields, improved nutritional content, and enhanced resistance to pests, diseases, and environmental stresses.
India’s Leadership in Food Security and Rice Production
During the event, Minister Chouhan highlighted India’s achievements in food security, noting that the country has become a global leader in rice production and exports. With rice output surpassing 150 million tonnes in 2025, India has overtaken China to become the world’s largest rice exporter. He also pointed out that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, over 3,200 new seed varieties have been developed across various crops in the past decade.
Strategic Planning and Policy Measures
The Minister emphasized that agricultural schemes are now being implemented to reach farmers nationwide within three years of launch. He outlined a planning strategy involving six zonal-level regional conferences conducted before the national Rabi and Kharif conferences. These consultations aim to develop a comprehensive “Krishi Roadmap” customized to the requirements of different states and agro-climatic zones.
Upcoming Seed Sector Reforms
Chouhan also announced plans to introduce the Seed Bill in the upcoming Parliamentary session. The proposed legislation seeks to strengthen regulatory oversight, ensure quality standards, and improve transparency in the seed sector, further supporting farmers and promoting innovation in agricultural research and development.
