Description
Haryana has reported a marked improvement in its sex ratio at birth (SRB), which increased to 923 in 2025, the highest level recorded in the state over the past five years. This represents a 13-point rise compared to the SRB of 910 in 2024, pointing to the impact of sustained administrative action and strict enforcement against gender-biased practices.
Birth Data and Overall Trends
Official figures show that the state recorded 5,19,691 births during 2025, comprising 2,70,281 boys and 2,49,410 girls. The improved SRB indicates a recovery following the decline seen in 2024 and is higher than the ratios recorded between 2020 and 2024, signalling a positive and encouraging trend.
District-Wise Performance
At the district level, Panchkula topped the list with an SRB of 971, a significant improvement from 915 in the previous year. Fatehabad (961) and Panipat (951) also recorded strong performance. Several districts, including Ambala, Bhiwani, Hisar, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mewat, Sirsa, and Yamunanagar, surpassed the state average. In contrast, Gurugram registered only a slight increase to 901, while Sonipat saw a decline, with its SRB falling to 894.
Enforcement Against Illegal Practices
State officials attributed the improvement largely to stringent action against sex-selective practices. During 2025, authorities carried out 154 inspections and raids under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act. As a result, 41 chemist shops were sealed and 395 medical termination of pregnancy centres were closed for violations. Additionally, 114 FIRs were filed under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, and 83 charge sheets were submitted.
Policy Measures and Government Monitoring
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini highlighted that Haryana’s SRB was as low as 871 in 2014, placing it among the worst-performing states at the time. Following the launch of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Panipat in 2015, the state intensified enforcement and monitoring. In 2025, a special health department task force conducted regular weekly reviews, contributing to the steady improvement in sex ratio indicators.
