India recorded 166 tiger deaths in 2025, according to the latest figures released by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). This is a significant rise from the 126 tiger fatalities reported in 2024, highlighting ongoing conservation challenges despite the country’s growing tiger population.

State-Wise Distribution of Tiger Deaths

Among states, Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of deaths with 55 tigers, followed by Maharashtra at 38. Other notable figures include Kerala (13 deaths) and Assam (12 deaths). Of the total fatalities nationwide, 31 were tiger cubs, emphasizing the vulnerability of younger tigers in the wild.

Habitat Pressure and Territorial Conflicts

Wildlife experts point to increasing territorial disputes and habitat constraints as major factors behind the rising mortality. As tiger populations grow within protected areas, competition for space has intensified, particularly in core forest zones. Madhya Pradesh, which has seen a significant surge in tiger numbers over the past decade, has experienced frequent confrontations among adult tigers due to limited habitat availability.

Causes of Death

• Natural Causes: Injuries from fights with other tigers were the leading cause in Madhya Pradesh.

• Poaching: Some deaths were linked to illegal hunting.

• Electrocution: Seven fatalities nationwide were attributed to accidental electrocution.

Forest officials note that dispersing sub-adult tigers, especially young males leaving their mothers after around 20 months, face the highest risks while searching for new territories.

Conservation Progress and Ongoing Challenges

India’s tiger conservation efforts continue to receive global recognition. According to the latest all-India tiger census in 2023, tiger numbers increased from 2,967 in 2018 to 3,682 in 2022, reflecting an annual growth rate of around 6%.
