Description
Assam is set to become the first state in India to provide proton therapy for cancer treatment within a public healthcare system. The state government plans to procure a high-end proton therapy machine at an estimated cost of ?500 crore, marking a major step forward in specialised oncology care. This initiative also positions Assam as a growing hub for medical tourism in eastern India.
Government-Led Proton Therapy Initiative
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a tender has been floated for the procurement of the proton therapy equipment. Currently, proton therapy is available only in the private sector in India, with facilities such as Tata Memorial Centre and Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. No government-run institution in the country currently offers this advanced radiotherapy, making Assam’s move a national first.
Precision-Based Cancer Treatment
Proton therapy is a highly targeted form of radiation treatment that delivers energy directly to tumours while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. It is particularly effective for paediatric cancers and tumours located near critical organs, including the brain, spine, and eyes. The state government highlighted that this facility will reduce the need for patients from the Northeast to travel outside the region for advanced cancer treatment.
Boost to Medical Tourism and Healthcare Infrastructure
The Chief Minister stated that the proton therapy facility will integrate with Assam’s existing cancer care network and create opportunities for medical tourism. Over the last five years, the state has expanded oncology services through new medical colleges and cancer hospitals. This new facility is expected to attract patients from neighbouring states and countries, strengthening Assam’s role as a regional healthcare hub.
Parallel Infrastructure and Development Initiatives
In addition to healthcare, Assam is pushing forward with major infrastructure projects, including new bridges over the Brahmaputra, an elevated corridor through Kaziranga, and a proposed underwater road-rail tunnel. The state cabinet has also approved funding for new schools and medical college expansions, reflecting a multi-sector development strategy backed by long-term public investment.
