The National Testing Agency (NTA) is conducting the JEE (Main) 2026 examination in two sessions. Registration for Session 1 was open from October 31 to November 27, 2025. During the scrutiny of application forms, NTA identified that some applicants had used identity documents other than Aadhaar, while in certain cases, the live photograph captured during registration did not match the photograph available in the UIDAI records.
To address these discrepancies and ensure a fair verification process, NTA introduced an additional photo and identity verification mechanism for affected candidates. Following multiple representations from students, the agency has relaxed the verification requirements and extended the deadline for submitting the required certificate to January 15, 2026, providing candidates additional time to complete the process.

Issue of Non-Aadhaar Registration and Photo Discrepancies
As per the official notification, a number of JEE Main 2026 applicants did not submit their Aadhaar card as the primary identity proof. Additionally, mismatches were found between the live photographs uploaded during registration and the images stored in the UIDAI database. Such inconsistencies could lead to identity verification challenges at the examination centres.
To avoid inconvenience to candidates and to maintain the integrity of the examination, NTA has made it mandatory for these candidates to complete verification through a supplementary certification process. This step applies only to those whose Aadhaar details or photographs could not be authenticated during the online application stage.
Document Attestation Now Allowed by Gazetted Officers
Initially, NTA required candidates to upload a certificate with a recent photograph, duly signed and verified by the Head of the Institution, such as a School Principal or College Head. However, many candidates reported difficulties in reaching these authorities, especially in remote areas.
Considering these concerns, NTA has permitted candidates to get the verification certificate attested by Class-I Gazetted Officers. Acceptable authorities include Tehsildars, Revenue Officers, Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), District Magistrates (DMs), and Class-I Gazetted Officers of Indian Embassies in the case of NRI applicants. This relaxation is expected to simplify and speed up the verification process.
Extended Deadline and Examination-Day Verification Guidelines
The deadline to upload the photo verification certificate in PDF format has now been extended to January 15, 2026. The upload link has been shared with affected candidates through their registered email addresses. Candidates must ensure that the form is properly completed, signed, attested, and uploaded within the given timeline.
In addition to online submission, candidates are required to carry a printed copy of the same certificate to the examination centre. This document will be used for physical verification on the exam day. Candidates are strongly advised to carefully follow all instructions to avoid any issues during entry or verification at the test centre.
