The 44th Junior National Kho Kho Championship kicked off at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in Gunjur, Bengaluru, featuring nearly 1,000 young athletes from states and union territories across India. The tournament includes both boys’ and girls’ categories and serves as a key platform for developing grassroots talent in one of the country’s traditional sports.
Participation and Competitive Action
On the opening day, around 40 matches were conducted, highlighting the high level of participation and competitive spirit among the junior players. The championship follows a league-cum-knockout format, providing teams ample match exposure before the elimination rounds. The semifinals are scheduled for January 3, with the finals set for January 4, promising an exciting culmination.
Inauguration and Official Support
The event was inaugurated by former minister H. Nagesh, with officials from the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) and the Karnataka State Kho Kho Association (KSKKA) in attendance. The tournament is being conducted with standardised officiating and professional logistical arrangements as per national federation guidelines.
Player Development and Facilities
KKFI President Sudhanshu Mittal emphasized that the junior nationals offer young athletes valuable national exposure and skill-building opportunities. KSKKA President Lokeshwara highlighted recent improvements in training, coaching, and sports infrastructure, which have strengthened player readiness and performance.
Upcoming National Championships
Following this junior event, the 58th Senior National Kho Kho Championship will be held in Kazipet, Telangana, from January 11 to 15. The 35th Sub-Junior National Championship is scheduled in Kurukshetra, Haryana, from January 31 to February 4, ensuring a packed calendar for the sport at the national level.
