Description
A rapidly intensifying winter storm evolved into a bomb cyclone across much of the United States on Monday, causing severe travel disruptions just days before the New Year holiday. Named Winter Storm Ezra, the system brought blizzard conditions, strong winds, and widespread power outages from the Midwest to the East Coast, leaving thousands of travelers stranded during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Widespread Travel Chaos
Air travel was hit particularly hard, with airports struggling to manage operations amid deteriorating conditions. By Monday afternoon, nearly 6,000 flights were delayed and over 750 canceled, according to FlightAware. Since Friday, weather-related disruptions have led to more than 3,600 cancellations and over 30,000 delays nationwide. Major airports, including Washington Dulles, Boston Logan, Newark Liberty, and Detroit Metropolitan, reported ground stops or extended delays due to high winds and low visibility. Airlines such as American, United, Delta, and JetBlue waived change fees to assist affected passengers.
Understanding a Bomb Cyclone
A bomb cyclone forms when atmospheric pressure drops sharply, typically by at least 24 millibars within 24 hours, leading to rapidly intensifying storms with hurricane-force winds, heavy snow, ice, and potential flooding. Meteorologists explained that Winter Storm Ezra strengthened as frigid Arctic air collided with warmer southern air, producing dramatic temperature swings. Some central U.S. areas experienced overnight drops of nearly 50°F.
Blizzards, Extreme Cold, and Power Failures
Blizzard conditions affected the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes, with wind chills plummeting to -30°F in North Dakota and Minnesota. Snowfall reached up to two feet in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, creating dangerous road conditions. Over 350,000 power outages were reported, with Michigan and upstate New York hardest hit. On the Great Lakes, waves on Lake Superior reached nearly 20 feet, forcing cargo vessels to seek shelter and raising concerns about flooding along Lake Erie.
Warnings as the Storm Moves East
Authorities warned that hazardous conditions could persist into early Tuesday as the storm progresses eastward. Winter storm warnings were issued in parts of the Northeast for freezing rain, flooding, and lake-effect snow. Residents were urged to avoid non-essential travel and stay updated on weather advisories as Winter Storm Ezra continues to impact large parts of the country.
