Description
In a significant step towards strengthening wetland protection in northern India, the Parvati–Arga Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh has been notified as an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ). The move provides enhanced statutory safeguards to this ecologically valuable yet relatively under-recognised wetland, aiming to conserve biodiversity while ensuring environmentally responsible development around the sanctuary.
Official Notification and Purpose
The Eco-Sensitive Zone status has been granted through a notification issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Union Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh shared details of the decision, noting that the objective is to regulate activities in the surrounding landscape. By acting as a protective buffer, the ESZ seeks to curb unplanned construction, pollution, and unsustainable land use, while promoting controlled eco-friendly tourism.
Environmental Importance of the Sanctuary
Located in Gonda district, the Parvati–Arga Bird Sanctuary spans approximately 1,084 hectares and represents a typical Indo-Gangetic floodplain wetland system. It consists of two permanent freshwater oxbow lakes—Parvati and Arga—formed from former river courses. These wetlands contribute significantly to groundwater replenishment, flood control, and climate adaptation, besides sustaining rich biodiversity.
Critical Habitat for Avian Species
The sanctuary serves as an important winter refuge and transit point for migratory birds travelling from Central Asia and the Tibetan Plateau. Its designation as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance highlights its global ecological value. The area is particularly vital for several threatened vulture species, including the white-rumped vulture, Indian vulture, and the Egyptian vulture, which depend on the wetland for feeding and nesting. However, ecological pressures such as the spread of invasive aquatic plants like water hyacinth remain a concern.
Conservation Role of Eco-Sensitive Zones
Eco-Sensitive Zones act as intermediary areas between protected ecosystems and human settlements. For Parvati–Arga, the ESZ framework will help regulate construction activity, limit polluting industries, and guide land-use practices. These controls are expected to preserve the wetland’s hydrological integrity and bird habitats, while allowing sustainable livelihoods and development in nearby communities.
